No Man’s Sky Omega Update Overhauls Expeditions, Playable for Free This Weekend

No Man’s Sky has received yet another huge update today, 15th February 2024, and it’s good news for basically everyone. The Omega update is primarily concerned with Expeditions, the game’s community-focused mini campaigns that blend together all its various features. A whole new Expedition, also titled Omega, is star of the show, and best of all, it’ll be completely free to play — whether you own No Man’s Sky or not.

Yes, from now until Monday 18th February, you’ll be able to take part in this latest Expedition, no purchase necessary. That’s across PS5, PS4, PSVR, and PSVR2 versions of the game. Omega has been designed with newcomers in mind offering “a thorough introduction” to the game, and if you decide to purchase No Man’s Sky afterwards, your progress and rewards will carry over.

In addition to the new Expedition, an overhaul of how Expeditions work in the game has been made. Instead of being a separate mode, they’re now folded into the main game, meaning you can partake in an Expedition and carry all your rewards over to your main save.

This update also adds new procedurally generated quests, given by on-planet NPCs. If you find an alien to speak to while exploring, they may give you a mission specific to the immediate surroundings.

Finally, you’ll also be able to do battle with a pirate dreadnought and its frigates. If you can best the fleet, you can board the dreadnought and demand control.
