Police have arrested the driver of a vehicle that struck several pedestrians before colliding with two other vehicles near the corner of Bourke and Russell streets in Melbourne’s CBD.

Photos posted to social media showed two severely damaged white sedans on Bourke Street and a number of injured pedestrians.

The incident occurred about 6pm. The total number of people injured is not yet known.

Police have closed Bourke Street from Swanston Street through to Exhibition Street.

“The driver of the vehicle was arrested at the scene and is in custody,” a statement from police said.

“There is no ongoing threat to the community.”

VicTraffic said the intersection of Bourke and Russell streets was closed in all directions due to the incident and people travelling through the city were advised to avoid the area and use Exhibition, Collins or Lonsdale streets instead.

Trams along Bourke Street were suspended between Spencer Street and Melbourne Museum, while trams along Swanston Street were being diverted between Dorcas and Franklin streets.
