Irish Gardaí (police) have arrested a man for robbing a sportsbook in north Dublin at knifepoint.

Police in the Swords district of Dublin took the unnamed man, who is in his 40s, into custody Saturday and shared the news on X the same day:

According to Irish news site Sunday World, the armed robbery occurred at a betting shop on Dublin’s North Street in Swords at approximately 10am. The robber threatened sportsbook employees with a knife, taking their mobile phones and stealing cash. A police spokesperson stated that “there was no injuries reported.”

The suspect is being detained for questioning at a north Dublin police station and will appear before the Swords District Court on Monday.

“The charges include today’s incident and two other recent robberies from premises in the Swords area on December 15 and 17, 2023,” police added.

The armed robbery is similar to an incident in Edinburgh, Scotland last year in which a 23-year-old man stole £40,800 ($48,916) in casino chips and £7,345 ($8,806) in cash at knifepoint from Genting Casino. He sketched out his heist plans on the back of a pizza box.
