ProLiteracy was presented the Dyer Pearl Literacy Award at the Barbara Bush Foundation’s National Summit on Adult Literacy.

“We congratulate our fellow recipients, and at this pivotal moment, reaffirm ProLiteracy’s support of the National Action Plan and our commitment to working together to transform the lives of low-literate adults,” said Mark Vineis, ProLiteracy president and CEO.

On Wednesday, October 20, 2021, ProLiteracy was presented the Dyer Pearl Literacy Award at the Barbara Bush Foundation’s National Summit on Adult Literacy. The event was held at the REACH at the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. First Lady Jill Biden delivered the keynote remarks at the event.

Awarded by the Barbara Bush Foundation, the honor recognizes organizations whose work exemplifies 1) strong and successful community collaborations; 2) successful and/or scalable programs in family, adult, and/or child literacy; and 3) best practices in adult literacy.

The award is named for Rebecca Dyer, a longtime employee of the Barbara Bush Foundation and adult literacy advocate. ProLiteracy was one of the four national and community-based organizations to receive the award based on their exemplary work in the field of adult or family literacy.

“We are grateful to the Barbara Bush Foundation for this meaningful recognition. We are humbled to be in such company as the Coalition on Adult Basic Education; the Irving, Texas, Independent School District Adult Education Program; Strong City Baltimore; and Sharon Darling, founder of the National Center for Families Learning,” said Ginger Duiven, ProLiteracy Board Chair, “We know that to solve the literacy crisis, it will take all of us working together to solve this complex, systemic issue.”

“It is an honor to be chosen for such a prestigious award as the Dyer Pearl Award and to be recognized for our resources, professional development, research, and advocacy work that we do on behalf of our member and customer network. We are proud partners and supporters of the National Action Plan,” said Michele Diecuch, ProLiteracy’s Senior Director of Programs.

The summit brought researchers, experts, and innovators from the field of education and adult literacy together alongside philanthropists and industry partners—with the mission of working together to solve America’s low literacy problem. The goal of the summit was to announce and discuss the National Action Plan for Adult Literacy. ProLiteracy participated in the five national planning teams that informed the content and goals of the National Action Plan.

“Being recognized in this way is a tremendous honor for our organization, partners, foundations, and donors,” said Mark Vineis, ProLiteracy president and CEO, “We congratulate our fellow recipients, and at this pivotal moment, reaffirm ProLiteracy’s support of the National Action Plan and our commitment to working together to transform the lives of low-literate adults.”
