Qatar Airways and RwandAir have expanded their codeshare partnership. The new agreement will provide customers with an enhanced service and greater connectivity to more than 65 global destinations. As a part of the enhanced agreement, the Rwandan national flag carrier will launch a new non-stop flight between Kigali and Doha starting in December.

Passengers who fly on both airlines can now enjoy the simplicity of purchasing connecting flights on either airline’s reservation system. By doing this, the process of buying tickets, booking luggage, check-in, and boarding can now be done for the entire journey.

The codeshare helps expand Qatar Airways presence in Africa

When speaking about the improved codeshare agreement in a company statement Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker, said:

“We share a very close and collaborative bond with Rwanda and welcome RwandAir’s new non-stop service between Kigali and our home in Doha. With this comprehensive codeshare agreement, we are committed to delivering greater choice and connectivity to our customers in Africa and around the world. The new partnership will help position Qatar Airways in the region and complement our African expansion strategy. As we brace ourselves to meet significantly increased demand for long-awaited travel, I see dynamic partnerships like this one helping to steer travel, tourism, and trade firmly on the path to recovery.”

In the same statement following the signing of the enhanced codeshare agreement RwandAir Chief Executive Officer, Ms. Yvonne Makolo, said:

“This is a major milestone for RwandAir and marks the beginning of an exciting new journey with Qatar Airways. We are also immensely proud to welcome Doha to our route network, connecting customers with Qatar’s hub and further expanding their flight map.

“This codeshare agreement will give our customers significantly more choice and flexibility, allowing RwandAir to strengthen its global presence and build on its strong and loyal African customer base.

As we continue to grow out of the pandemic, this partnership represents yet another extremely important step on our recovery runway, and we hope to deliver more commitments like this to our customers in the very near future.”

Doha is a significant global hub

The new codeshare will increase Qatar Airways footprint on the African continent while allowing Rwandans and other Africans to take advantage of Qatar Airways global network. Qatar Airways passengers can now connect seamlessly on RwandAir flights from Kigali International Airport (KGL) to several destinations that include Bujumbura, Kinshasa, and Lubumbashi.

For RwandAir customers, the international hub at Hamad International Airport (DOH) will allow them to connect on Qatar Airways flights to Asia, Europe, and the United States. The newly expanded codeshare will also allow customers to accrue loyalty points on both airlines and provide reciprocal access to airport lounges in Kigali and Doha.

Kigali to Doha on RwandAir

Regarding the new 2,362 nautical miles non-stop RwandAir flights between Kigali and Doha, no announcement has been made as to the frequency of the flights. Qatar Airways currently flies five times a week between Doha and Kigali, albeit with a stopover in Entebbe, So it’s probably safe to assume it will be more than one flight per week. RwandAir could choose to deploy one of its two Airbus A330s on the route or even perhaps offer a daily flight using a Boeing 737-800.
