Apple unveiled the iPhone 15 and 15 Pro during its September event this week, and the big new feature (from my perspective) was the 15 Pro’s ability to play console games.

During the event, Apple showed off and announced Resident Evil 4 Remake, Resident Evil Village, and Assassins Creed Mirage will arrive over the coming months.

Following the event, we learned that Death Stranding was also on its way. This is all thanks to Apple’s new A17 chip, which features MetalFX upscaling, its own version of DLSS or FSR, and hardware ray tracing support.

It’s Undeniable That the A17 is Impressive

Look, even though I’m an Android gamer at heart, I can’t deny that this news is deeply impressive. I watched the Apple event, and felt pretty fiercely jealous about this news.

So much so, I’ve been hoping Google would quickly announce something competitive. After all, there is a precedent. When Apple announced Arcade, Google was quick to retort with the Play Pass.

And while Google might well be cooking something up, it’s actually RedMagic who got the first shot in. In a recent tweet, posted below, RedMagic showed off Cyberpunk 2077 running on a RedMagic 7S Pro.

Cyberpunk 2077 on a Phone?!

It’s caveat time! Cyberpunk 2077 is running via an emulator, Box64Droid. It’s also running at 5fps, which I think we can all agree is far from a playable frame rate.

However, I do agree with RedMagi’s assessment that this is impressive, and that the future is bright for mobile gaming. Besides, there have been two RedMagic phones since then…

Okay, the RedMagic 8 and 8S Pro probably can’t still run Cyberpunk 2077, but it’s only a matter of time until a RedMagic phone can. So, while Apple’s announcement is impressive, Android is also getting there.

Can Snapdragon or Google Answer Apple’s Battle Cry?

And who knows what else is cooking up. If anything, this pressure from Apple will likely accelerate progress from Snapdragon or Google to get competitive performance out of Android.

Either way, the sky is the limit and, either way, we are entering a period where your phone is going to compete with your console for power. Whether you like that or not is a different matter, but it’s going to happen.
