The Resident Evil series’ beloved bonus mode, The Mercenaries, will return in Resident Evil Village, Capcom announced Thursday during the Resident Evil Showcase livestream. Resident Evil Village game director Morimasa Sato confirmed that the extra mode will be included with the main game, and it will include a few changes this time around.

Resident Evil Village’s version of The Mercenaries will include the same high-speed, arcade-style action of previous iterations, Sato said. Players will still have to fight to reach the end of a stage under strict time limitations. This time around, Sato explained, players will be able to visit an in-game shop between areas. Just like in the main game, Mercenaries players will be able to buy items and upgrades from the Duke’s Emporium.

In addition to consumable items, upgrades, and weapon customization, Resident Evil Village’s version of The Mercenaries will give players special abilities. They be able to choose from perks like increased weapon damage, faster movement speed, and stronger defense during their playthroughs. Capcom’s preview of the bonus game mode also showed abilities like HP recovery when attacking and enemy corpses that explode.

The Mercenaries was an oft-requested addition to Resident Evil Village, particularly after the reveal of the deathmatch game Resident Evil Re:Verse was unveiled to a mixed response. Capcom introduced The Mercenaries as a bonus mode in the original Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. The mode wasn’t present in last year’s Resident Evil 3 remake — Capcom opted for the 4v1 multiplayer game Resident Evil Resistance instead — or in Resident Evil 7 biohazard.

Resident Evil Village is coming to Google Stadia, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox Series X, and Xbox One on May 7.
