Samsung Launches 3D Map View For SmartThings

Samsung has launched its 3D Map View feature for SmartThings, which allows users to see a virtual 3D map of their home and easily control connected devices like lights, thermostats, and appliances.

The 3D Map View, first unveiled at CES 2024, is now available in all countries where SmartThings is accessible. It addresses the challenge of managing the growing number of smart home devices by consolidating them into an interactive 3D rendering of the user’s floor plan.

Unlike the previous 2D version which required a provided floor plan, the new 3D Map View leverages spatial AI and LiDAR sensors in Samsung devices like the Bespoke Jet Bot to precisely map a home’s layout. This gives users a better understanding of their home’s shape and layout within the SmartThings app:

“Samsung is constantly working to enable customers to control their home devices without any inconvenience at any time and place, and Map View is the result of these efforts,” said Seungbeom Choi, Head of Device Platform Center at Samsung Electronics.

The enhanced Map View also includes improved filtering to monitor and control specific devices more efficiently. Samsung plans to add AI characters unveiled at CES by the end of the year for a more personalised smart home experience.

“We will continue to introduce a variety of relevant services and features so our customers can enjoy optimal smart home experiences with a better life,” adds Choi.

Initially launched in Korea and the US last year, Map View’s global rollout allows SmartThings users worldwide to take advantage of the new 3D mapping capabilities. Samsung is also collaborating with construction companies to expand Map View to apartments, offices, and create optimised large-screen UX for commercial applications.
