Samsung SmartThings adds support for the Matter protocol

Samsung’s smart home platform SmartThings has added support for the industry-changing Matter protocol.

Matter is a new IoT standard that’s backed by more than 180 companies (even Apple!) and is guided by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (formerly Zigbee Alliance) whose members span various industries.

Michelle Mindala-Freeman, Head of Marketing for the Connectivity Standards Alliance, said:

“We truly believe that Matter is the foundation and future of IoT, and we are thrilled that Samsung SmartThings will be embedding it into so many products, accelerating smart home adoption and bringing users more convenient connected home experiences wherever they are.”

Announced at the Samsung Developer Conference, the addition of Matter support to SmartThings provides further connectivity options to users of the South Korean giant’s devices.

Jaeyeon Jung, Corporate Vice President at Samsung Electronics and Head of SmartThings, commented:

“Samsung televisions, appliances, and Galaxy devices are part of everyday life for millions of people around the world and integrating SmartThings hub functionality into these devices will make it easier for users to experience connected living without additional hardware purchase.

On top of that, adding Matter support into the SmartThings platform will only broaden the choices of devices to connect as Matter-enabled devices flood into the market next year.”

SmartThings has helped to bring together the fragmented connected home ecosystem with its support for other standards including Z-Wave and Zigbee. Rather than require an isolated hub for each standard, SmartThings has aimed to simplify the experience for smart home users by unifying as much as possible under a single platform.

Devices with Matter support will join other devices supported by SmartThings including those from Google, Philips Hue, Yale, Wemo, Honeywell Home, and more.

“Matter will help drive a surge in smart home adoption, and with SmartThings, it will be easier for users to gain smart home experiences with seamless device onboarding, customised automation, and a choice of voice assistants,” added Jung.

“We’re proud to have been leading this standardisation initiative since its inception, alongside other industry leaders in an effort to bring the Matter protocol to life.”

Samsung says it will bring Matter to “multiple products” in 2022.
