Senegalese Locals Demand Answers on the Akon City Progress

Akon faced criticism a year after he announced the supposed “headquarters for all Africans” — a city that he says will be a crypto-powered economy. The world, Africa, and the people of Senegal have yet to see any progress beyond the ceremonial layering of stone. This is an event, which took place on August 31, 2020, at the 2,000 acres of land located in the village of Mbodiene.

The lack of clarity regarding the plans and progress of the green city has raised questions and arguments. While the Senegalese locals question why the project has not commenced, many believe it is simply another PR stunt.

The singer declared in 2018 that he will be building a “crypto city” which he called the “Real-life Wakanda”. Akon also stated that just like the fictional land of Wakanda in Marvel’s Black Panther, the smart city will be a ‘futuristic environment”.

This green city, according to him, will include an airport and luxury high-rise apartment complexes. Also, an education district that will accommodate the world’s most prestigious universities is included in the plans. Solar power and a steller-based cryptocurrency he named “Akoin” was also advertised. This sets a pedestal for development in Africa while creating employment.

All hope may seem lost, however, a statement by the Akon city contractor, Paul Martin of the U.S-based engineering firm, KE International implies that the 12-month delay is a result of the contractor’s intent to plan, get approvals, procurement and subcontractors.
