Large-scale renewable energy projects will be installed at RAAF Bases Darwin and Tindal as part of a wider $13 million investment in solar power from the federal government.
The systems will be located at five Defence sites as part of a nationwide Defence Renewable Energy and Energy Security Program, according to a public announcement on 7 May.
Other ADF bases set for an upgrade include Robertson and Larrakeyah Barracks and Harts Range.
Assistant Minister for Defence Matt Thistlethwaite said the projects will increase resilience at Defence bases.
“We are prioritising infrastructure development in the north to support future Defence needs,” he said.
“The Albanese government knows that the cheapest form of energy is renewable energy and is committed to reducing emissions.
“The Defence Strategic Review calls on Defence to accelerate its transition to clean energy, and projects like this are an example of the work we have already committed to in this space, and we will continue to build on into the future.”
The investment for the north is part of the government’s $64 million nationwide Defence Renewable Energy and Energy Security Program.
