Some of these classics popped into your head as soon as you read “synth” and “movie” in the same sentence. MovieWeb shares 22 of the best, some of which you may not even associate with synths.

Synthesizers coax an immediate connotation out of an audience. They’ve become associated with films from the 1980s, but have had a much broader use, utilizing the analog technology of synths like the Roland Juno 106 and the Memorymoog polysynths innovated by Robert Moog that became earmarks of the 80s sound but found broad applications throughout music as early as the 1960s. Innovators like Giorgio Moroder and Tangerine Dream were at the forefront of a movement which married the early House sounds of Detroit to European synth-disco, sequencing drum machines to bring the emotive, artificial sounds to life in their own albums and their film scores. These innovators took the austere sounds of groups like Kraftwerk and made them into upbeat songs that drove films.
