T-Mobile investigating a potential hack into its system

Recently, T-Mobile revealed there is a high possibility that a data breach has occurred in its system, compromising its 100 million users’ data.

According to Vice’s Motherboard, a Canadian-American magazine, a hacker claimed that he/she has successfully obtained the data of more than 100 million users in the servers of T-Mobile.

The hacker is reportedly asking for 6 BTC, which is currently valued at $287,000, in exchange for some (and not all) of data that was stolen.

Sensitive data compromised

The magazine claims to have seen samples of the data that were compromised which includes names, physical addresses, social security numbers, phone numbers, driver license information, and even the unique IMEI numbers.

The publication added that the seller is privately selling most of the data at the moment, but will hand over a large chunk of the stolen data for Bitcoin ransom.

The seller said that T-Mobile may have already found out that a hacking incident has actually occurred because its backdoor systems are already inaccessible.

Responding to the incident, a T-Mobile spokesperson said they do not have any additional information to share at this time.

Not the first hacking incident

This is actually not T-Mobile’s first time to be entangled in such a mess. Just last February, it was sued by one of its customers who lost $450,000 in bitcoin in a SIM-swap attack.

The victim, Calvin Cheng, accused the carrier of failing to implement the necessary security measures to prevent this hacking incident from happening.

T-Mobile was also sued in July 2020 by a crypto company chief executive over a series of SIM swaps that resulted in the loss of around $8.7 million in crypto assets.

Since these hacking incidents, T-Mobile has repeatedly promised its customers that it would beef up its security systems.
