At DIY Builds, they wanted to add some soundproofing to the shop and were curious to know which material would offer the biggest bang for the buck.
The experiment they came up with was pretty clever. They made boxes out of various materials (drywall, SONOpan, drywall and SONOpan, 3/4″ plywood, and foam) big enough to hold a small Bluetooth speaker. The speaker was sealed up inside of each box and then a dB meter was used to record the sound dampening ability of each material.
In the end, the winning material was SONOpan and drywall.
