It’s hard not to feel sorry for Leah and Liberty. The criticism from the judges hit them both hard, with Leah lashed for lacking soul and Liberty informed by new judge Marty Fox an empty room would have been an improvement on her styling.

They’re both in tears this episode.

Leah turns to Kristy and even Keith of all people, who for once doesn’t seem to be revelling in a contestant’s pain, giving her a hug and reminding her “there’s a long way to go, it’s early days”.

Liberty turns to her mum, who leaps to the kind of passionate potty-mouthed mum defence everyone deserves in their life.

“I just think it’s disgusting what that a—ehole real estate agent guy said to you,” she says.

Steph, on the other hand, is jubilant about her and Gian’s win, which might explain her complete inability to read the room. As she offers the losing contestants some side advice on where they went wrong, it’s surprising nobody decked her.

“I’ve always been super open about being able to give advice,” she trills. “Maybe they don’t want the advice but I’m happy to give it.”

To be fair, she was trying to assure Liberty and Leah that their styling wasn’t the problem, but sometimes you say it best when you say nothing at all.

Nonetheless, all the other contestants are kind about Steph and Gian’s room, admitting they nailed it with their warm and cosy guest bedroom.

It’s not all good news for Steph and Gian when they are ghosted by a potential buyer who promised to pony up $15,000 for the old hot tub that came with their house. But nothing can bring Steph down as she frolics through the room inspections with her $20,000 winning handbag on her arm.

And then it’s on to creating their work from home/extra bedroom/spare lounge room spaces.

Kristy and Brett and doing a corporate work-from-home space, with dark panelling and black desk. Steph and Gian and doing a work-from-home room that could easily be converted to an extra bedroom.

Liberty and Eliza are doing an extra bedroom because they created a work-from-home space in their studio last week, meaning they’ll be able to sell their house as a five-bedroom.

But Kristy and Brett and Leah and Ash cop a major blow when the demolition of their rooms reveals treated pine stumps, which no longer meet code.

That means their entire houses have to be restumped with concrete stumps, at the huge cost of time and money.

It’s one instance where it would seem fair for the contestants to be compensated with some extra help, given they have to pull up every floor, remove every stump, dig new holes and pour concrete.
