Unity: For the People
One of the most significant downsides of fiat currency that has become more apparent over the years is that it is restricted and confined to only certain groups of people and regions. With the world becoming more advanced and connected through the Internet and other forms of technology, fiat currency is limited in who or what it can serve.
The fiat currency in some nations is also used for nefarious reasons by the government against their people. Financial injustice and abuse are severe issues that often do not get as much recognition as they should. Tragically, many people live in nations where financial oppression and injustice are the norms, and frequently they are not having their voices properly or fairly heard. Or their hardships are not even considered in discussions surrounding Bitcoin because not enough people think about the issues of financial injustice from a global perspective.
As of 2020, approximately 4.2 billion people live under authoritarian rule where their fiat currency is being used as a weapon against them. Many live under the constant threat of government corruption which has grown roots and infected every corner of their life. Due to the mishandling of funds and politicians’ selfishness and recklessness, the inflation rate in many nations is rising. These things may cause citizens to live with emotional and psychological anguish, frequently due to the uncertainty of their future. Many people can not speak out about the injustices and frustration they live through in fear of retaliation from the government. In some nations, your bank account could be frozen, funds seized, or you could be thrown into prison. So while the fiat currency in some parts of the world may be viewed as a symbol of success, opportunity, or even freedom — they are the complete opposite in others.
Bitcoin gives power back to the individual people, rather than corporations or governments holding onto all of it. It is decentralized, censorship-resistant, borderless, private, etc. It puts the power in the hands of the individuals. Bitcoin’s qualities and principles have made it very capable of helping to preserve human rights and freedoms. It can not be used as a weapon in the way that fiat currency is in many nations. It can help allow people to survive, grow, and develop no matter where they are in the world. It can aid citizens to expose atrocities that may be happening in their country without fear of the government seizing their money because Bitcoin is seizure-resistant. It can help support people by keeping their money safe while acquiring resources and the means to leave these oppressive governments they live under.
Additionally, Bitcoin opens the door to so much potential for development, innovation, and funding of ideas anywhere around the globe. This alone is something incredibly powerful that is worthy of more extensive attention and discussion.
Especially now in today’s world because the challenges we face as a species in the coming years and decades are not confined to the borders of any nation — but are global. With the advancements in Artificial Intelligence and other disruptive technologies, global inequalities will worsen and bring new issues that we may not be fully prepared for. These issues are accelerating closer to us every day. As human beings, we need to ensure that every person has access to genuine financial freedom and privacy. And it has become clear that a decentralized, global currency is a possible route to achieve those things. Especially for those people living in countries where their fiat currency is used as a tool for surveillance and oppression. Because they will face even more significant hardships as some of these technologies evolve. These same concerns are relevant to individuals living in developing countries since they are at the highest risk of being left behind because they are often being taken advantage of by their own governments as well. If not taken into consideration, these issues could very well lead to some of these countries collapsing, which can and will inevitably affect every person on a global scale.
There is a lot of deep, important social value in Bitcoin that people do not always recognize. People often laugh or scoff at the idea, and sometimes they do not even want to take the time to hear other perspectives.
Bitcoin is not only about something so simple as a financial investment or just another cryptocurrency — it represents something so much deeper than that. It can very much bring peace, unity, and freedom. Not just on an individual level but on a global scale. If only we are willing to be open-minded and welcoming of that conversation.
