If you have a hefty collection of physical PS3 games, you might be sitting on a gold mine.
It’s perhaps inevitable, what with the announcement that Sony will soon be closing down the PlayStation Store on PS3, PS Vita and PSP consoles, that the value of some physical games on those formats will rise on the second-hand market. What’s surprising, however, is how fast some games have gained value. Needless to say, if you have a decent collection of PS3, PS Vita or PSP games, now may be the time to consider selling them unless you’re emotionally attached. But then who knows, maybe they’ll just keep gaining value? It’s a hard one to judge.
It’s the sharp rise in value of some PS3 games that’s most interesting – after all, plenty of PS Vita games have retained their value since the console was pretty much abandoned by Sony in 2015 and then discontinued 2019. While many PS3 games have steadily been increasing in value, some have shot up in the last month, no doubt due to collectors rushing to fill in their blanks. Japan Studio’s 2013 side-scrolling platformer Puppeteer, for example, frequently sold on eBay for around £20-£30 until March. Now it’s selling for around £100.

And there are many more games that may now cost you an arm and a leg if you want to own them on PS3. Folklore, the 2007 action role-playing game developed by Game Republic and published by Sony Computer Entertainment, is another game that now sells for around £100, it would seem. Earlier in March, some copies sold for as little as £15. Other titles now fetching a pretty penny include Capcom’s 2012 action game Asura’s Wrath, Insomniac’s Ratchet & Clank HD Trilogy and 2014’s JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure All-Star Battle by CyberConnect2.
Of course, it’s the sealed copies that are selling for the highest prices, but as long as they’re complete and in good condition, these rare-but-soon-to-be-even-rarer games will sell for a high price. It’s no doubt the result of the store closures being fresh in people’s minds, but the question is, where does the value of some of the PS3’s rarest games go from here? They may continue to rise once the digital storefronts have indeed closed. Or with the perils of a digital future being a current hot topic, they may begin to fall again once discussion has died down.
So, to sell or not to sell – that’s something you should consider if you’re sitting on an unused pile of PS3 games that you have no intention of keeping in the long term. Check their prices on second-hand sites such as eBay and you might find that you have some valuable assets on your hands. Like shares on the stock market, however, they could go up in value or they might decrease in value – it’s up to you to cash them in when the price is just right.
