Toyota Reports Increased Global Sales for May – The Detroit Bureau

Toyota reported its global sales and production for the month of May were both up year-over-year due to easing of semiconductor shortages. Additionally, Toyota credits increased sales to a rebound effect from the spread of COVID-19 as well as the semiconductor shortages of the past year.

Toyota saw its sales and production results both jump in May and for the year to date.

The automaker reported that global and overseas production both reached record highs as a result of increased production capacity in each region in response to solid demand. 

“We will continue to carefully monitor the parts supply situation and make every effort to deliver as many vehicles as possible to our customers at the earliest date,” the company said in a release. 

Breaking down the numbers

For the month of May, Toyota reported 838,478 global sales representing a 10.1% increase. Additionally, 721,524 sales took place outside of Japan for a 6.9% increase. This represents the fourth consecutive month of year-over-year increase worldwide, and the second consecutive month of year-over-year increase outside of Japan. 

May production was record-setting, with 847,000 vehicles produced worldwide, marking a 33.4% increase year-over-year. There were 598,713 units produced outside of Japan for a 22% increase year-over-year. Both are new high-water marks for the automaker.

Worldwide production was in the fifth straight month of year-over-year increase, while production outside Japan was in its second month of year-over-year increase. Exports from Japan totaled 141,774 vehicles and a 46.7% rise, marking the first year-over-year increase in six months. 

In addition to May monthly numbers, Toyota announced cumulative sales from January to May.

For the first five months of the year, Toyota worldwide sales totaled 4,038,687, up 4%. Sales outside of Japan were down by 0.4% to 3,302,510. Worldwide production was up 11.5% to 3,979,413, with 2,649,615 (+5.9%) taking place outside Japan. Exports from Japan totaled 690,933, up 1.4% for the period. 

Hybrid and EV sales grow

Global sales of Toyota and Lexus hybrid vehicles were 261,147 vehicles in May, up 25.8% over last year, and almost one-third of Toyota/Lexus vehicles sold worldwide for the month.

Plug-in hybrid sales totaled 10,593 units in May and 45,521 so far this year. Hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle sales totaled 560 for the month, and 1,761 so far this year. 

Full EV sales totaled 9,923 vehicles last month, with a total of 35,998 EVs sold during the first five months of the year. The May figure represents a 730% increase against year-ago numbers. 

North American sales

For North America, including Canada, the U.S., and Mexico, total sales for May were 220,403, up 3.4%. Toyota reports strong sales for Tundra and Tacoma pickup trucks, as well as general strength on increased semiconductor supply. 

North American production totaled 191,053 units in May, up 25.1%, and 812,442 vehicles so far this year, up 7.9% year-over-year. 

Of the Toyota/Lexus vehicles sold in North America in May, 63,328 were hybrids, plug-in hybrids, electrics, or fuel cells. That figure represents a 14.2% increase year-over-year.
