Dr. Wendy Wang’s paper, “eWOM, what are we suspecting? Motivation, truthfulness, or identity,” was recently published in Journal of Information, Communication, and Ethics in Society.

Dr. Wang, Department Chair of Trident University International’s (Trident) Information Technology Management program, co-authored this research with Dr. Xiao Zhang, Lamar University and Dr. Yun Wu, Salisbury University.

With the increased prevalence of fake information on the internet, Dr. Wang and the co-authors wanted to understand how skepticism can impact an individual’s attitude towards word-of-mouth (eWOM). They used three dimensions to examine eWOM skepticism: suspicion of motivation, suspicion of truthfulness, and suspicion of identity, as well as looking at the relationships among these three dimensions.

The results suggest that the suspicion of identity plays a major role in message credibility assessment, highlighting the importance of enhancing protective measures on eWOM platforms and stricter regulations to prevent organizations from adopting deceptive eWOM practices.

Dr. Wang has been published in the proceedings of conferences and journals such as DSI, AMCIS, Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology, Employee relations, and Journal of Decision Systems. Her research areas include social media, health care information systems, IT adoption, text abstraction and extraction, ERP implementation, telecommunication, and virtual organizations.

Dr. Wang holds a Ph.D. in Management Information Systems from the University of Mississippi with a minor in computer science.
