If Sonic The Hedgehog had come out in the era of tilt controls, there’s every chance that it might have looked a bit like Tumble Rush.

To put it another way, Tumble Rush looks—and sounds—quite a bit like Sonic The Hedgehog.

Sure, it’s 2.5D rather than 2D, and there are no loop-de-loops or checkerboard soilscapes—and there definitely isn’t a hedgehog.

But Tumble Rush does such a convincing job of recreating the frenetic sights and sounds of ‘90s console gaming that it would fit right in among the Sonics, Turricans, Shinobos, and countless other arcade hits of yesteryear.

Except it’s got tilt controls (though you can swap to touch controls if you prefer).

Let’s start with the story. It seems that the denizens of Ball Galaxy have been abducted by interstellar claw cranes and imprisoned in a vending machine. Only you can rescue them, even though you’re just another ball.

That’s it. That’s the story.

Described by the blurb as an “action marble maze”, Tumble Rush is a retro arcade game that sees you tilting your phone (or stabbing buttons) to steer an adorable sphere around holes and traps while collecting as many coins as possible in the process.

There are puzzles, too, and multiple modes. If you feel like a break from solving and rolling your way through the game’s hundreds of stages you can try a time trial, or see how you fare in the endless mode.

Plus, you can collect dozens of cute character skins for your spherical protagonist by spending the coins that you pick up during runs. It’s like gacha, but earned.

Tumble Rush is the first release by Canadian studio Juvenile Pursuits Inc., and features music from Sean “CosmicGem” Bialo—the composer behind Penny’s Big Breakaway, Chiki’s Chase, and Donut Dodo, among others.

If you haven’t already checked out the trailer, seen the graphics, and heard the music, do it now.
