Epperson’s presentation, titled “Results from Real BVLOS Flights and Next Steps in Development of Innovative Detect-and-Avoid for BVLOS UAS Flight,” is scheduled for 10:10-10:30 am CT on Thursday, October 14 and will discuss the state of development of detect-and-avoid systems for unmanned aircraft to allow for safe beyond visual line-of-sight (BVLOS) flight of both large and small unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) in the United States.

This session will review the state of development of detect-and-avoid systems for unmanned aircraft to allow for safe BVLOS flight of both large and small UAS in the United States, including actual waivered BVLOS flights, technologies used, software and hardware integration, field test results and fully install systems in use today, with photos and analysis.

The presentation will review real BVLOS projects and results that are leading the way to effective, practical detect-and-avoid systems and discuss the mix of processes and technologies necessary to create an effective safety system for UAS.

The session will conclude with insights into industry next steps, the changing regulatory landscape and rapidly emerging industry opportunities.
