Vigilant Aerospace Presenting “Developing & Testing a Real-World BVLOS Multi-Sensor DAA System for sUAS at 2021 AUVSI BAM Forum

Source Node: 836618

Vigilant Aerospace Systems has been invited to speak at the upcoming AUVSI Business of Automated Mobility (BAM) Virtual Forum event on June 23-24, 2021.

The session titled “Developing and Testing a Real-World, Beyond Visual Line-of-Sight, Multi-Sensor Detect-and-Avoid System for sUAS” will feature a presentation from Vigilant Aerospace Systems CEO Kraettli Epperson followed by a brief Q&A session.

Developing and Testing a Real-World Beyond Visual Line-of-Sight, Multi-Sensor Detect-and-Avoid System for sUAS

June 23, 2021

Time: TBA

Venue: Online

Speaker: Kraettli L. Epperson, CEO, Vigilant Aerospace Systems

Details:
This presentation will review and explain Vigilant Aerospace System’s recent work in the design, development and real-world testing of a multi-sensor detect-and-avoid system design to help small unmanned aircraft to maintain required well-clear distances from manned aircraft. Based on two patents licensed from NASA and ongoing commercialization work, the system is currently used in multiple NASA and FAA projects.

The presentation will discuss the equipment and systems used to establish and maintain air traffic situational awareness, general flight safety, and maintenance of well-clear throughout the flight of an unmanned aircraft. Utilizing on-board telemetry, transponder receivers and radars, this technology is designed to be a system that is economically viable for commercial small UAS operations beyond visual line-of-sight (BVLOS). The presentation will also include information on the system’s use during a recent 18-mile fully autonomous beyond visual line-of-sight flight carried out by Oklahoma State University with a small UAS inside  13-mile FAA authorized flight corridor.

Also, we will discuss the future road map for on-board detect-and-avoid system development, necessary research and testing steps, relevant published standards, waivers and regulatory changes, and emerging technologies and trends. Future integration work and flights are expected to incorporate Remote ID and UTM solutions that are also designed for small UAS operations. The presentation will help to answer the question of what factors are critical for BVLOS UAS safety and steps for future flights.
