Volkswagen Group has extended its partnership with Ohme as its official partner for home chargers for plug-in vehicle customers.

The businesses started working together in 2022 and the continued partnership will see Audi, Cupra, Seat, Skoda, VW and VW commercial vehicles customers introduced to Ohme solutions for each plug-in vehicle sale.

Kate Jeffreys, EV business lead for Volkswagen Group UK, said: “Following a robust procurement process, we were very happy to continue with Ohme as our official home EV charger for the Volkswagen Group. 

“Ohme’s attitude towards excellent customer service together with its award-winning chargers and its dynamic technology which is able to access some of the most affordable EV tariffs on the market, made it an obvious choice.

“As we move from early to mass adoption of EVs we need to support our customers in

making the switch and our ongoing relationship with Ohme is a key part of this.”

David Watson, Ohme CEO, said the extended deal cements his company’s position as the UK’s largest smart home EV charging company.

He said: “When our collaboration with the Volkswagen Group began in 2022, it already had one of the most comprehensive ranges of electric models and that has only grown.

“We look forward to continuing to introduce its drivers to the benefits of dynamic smart charging with dramatically reduced running costs.”

Volkswagen Group has sold more than 771,000 electric vehicles, over a third more than in 2022. In the UK, it was responsible for one in every five battery electric passenger cars sold.

Annual charging costs of under £130

With the average UK driver covering 6800 miles a year, smart charging on an off-peak tariff in a typical EV would cost £127.50 for a year’s worth of driving with Intelligent Octopus Go home energy tariff at 7.5p/kWh.

From April 1 with the new Standard Variable Tariff of 24.5p/kWh, that same annual mileage would cost £417.

By comparison, the same mileage in an equivalent petrol car would cost a driver more than £1100.

Ohme’s smart chargers can connect with the grid in real time, automatically adjusting to optimise the cost of charging and accessing all the times of the smartest, greenest and lowest cost energy tariffs.

Ohme also offers drivers the option to charge their car when renewable energy generation on the National Grid is at its highest, further lowering their CO2 impact.

Ohme is the official charger provider for the Volkswagen Group in the UK and Ireland as well as customers on the Motability scheme and was named as the Fast Track Company of the Year in the 2023 UK Green Business Awards.
