  • While we are currently witnessing the massive adoption and use cases of artificial intelligence (AI) across industries, we cannot deny the fact that AI does not only bring good things but also what humans may consider bad ones.
  • A study conducted by the professional services firm Accenture revealed that there is a high possibility that there are jobs that will be eliminated, and 40% of working hours across various industries could be affected by large language models, including ChatGPT, Google Bard, and Bing Chat.
  • BitPinas has asked Bard if it is aware that AI has a negative impact on some industries, and it said yes. Bard also provided five industries that it thinks are most affected by AI.

While we are currently witnessing the massive adoption and use cases of artificial intelligence (AI) across industries, we cannot deny the fact that AI does not only bring good things but also what humans may consider bad ones.

In fact, a study conducted by the professional services firm Accenture revealed that there is a high possibility that there are jobs that will be eliminated, and 40% of working hours across various industries could be affected by large language models, including ChatGPT, Google Bard, and Bing Chat.

Among the industries identified, banking was said to be the most affected, as 54% of tasks were found to have a high potential for automation, closely followed by insurance at 48%.

“Nearly every job will be impacted—some will be eliminated, most will be transformed, and many new jobs will be created,” Accenture reported.

With this, BitPinas’ curiosity has led the team to ask Bard, the experimental conversational AI service of Google, if it is aware that AI has a negative impact on other industries. And if yes, what does it think are those industries?

Customer Service

Customer service is the assistance and advice provided by a company to those people who buy or use its products or services. It is a key aspect of running a good business, as it can influence customer satisfaction, loyalty, and engagement.

Many companies use AI to improve the customer experience and create more delightful interactions with consumers. AI can help:

  • Respond to customer requests more quickly and accurately using chatbots and natural language processing.
  • Anticipate customer needs and behavior using predictive analytics.
  • Personalize customer interactions and recommendations using conversational AI and data analysis.
  • Reduce the cost-to-service and increase ‌revenue opportunities for businesses by increasing customer engagement, retention, and cross-sell/upsell potential.

Among the big names that utilize AI as part of customer service in their firms are Uber, Angkas, and other ride-hailing companies, which use AI to optimize pricing, routing, and driver allocation, as well as to provide customer support via chatbots and voice assistants.

Logistics

Logistics refers to the handling of the details of an operation. It is a key aspect of running a good business, as it can influence the efficiency, productivity, and profitability of the operations.

Many companies in the logistics industry use AI to improve the performance and quality of their operations. AI can help:

  • Optimize routes and schedules using data analysis and machine learning.
  • Monitor and track inventory and assets using sensors.
  • Predict demand and supply using forecasting and simulation models.
  • Automate tasks and processes using robotics and computer vision.
  • Enhance customer satisfaction using chatbots.
  • Reduce the costs and risks associated with logistics by increasing the accuracy, speed, and safety of the operations.

Among the big names that utilize AI as part of their logistics in their firms are Amazon, which uses robots to move goods around its warehouses, and drones to deliver packages to customers; and FedEx, which uses sensors and analytics to monitor its fleet, vehicles, and packages, autonomous vehicles to transport goods across its hubs, and blockchain to secure its transactions.

Manufacturing

Manufacturing is the creation or production of goods with the help of equipment, labor, machines, tools, and chemical or biological processing or formulation. It is a key aspect of economic development, as it can create jobs, income, and exports.

Many companies in the manufacturing industry use AI to improve the quality and efficiency of their production processes. AI can help:

  • Design and optimize products.
  • Monitor and control machines and equipment.
  • Detect and prevent defects and errors.
  • Automate tasks and processes.
  • Enhance customer satisfaction using chatbots.
  • Reduce the costs and risks associated with manufacturing by increasing the accuracy, speed, and safety of production.

Among the big names that utilize AI as part of their manufacturing processes are Boeing, which uses AI to design and test its aircraft, optimize its assembly lines, and monitor its flight operations; and Toyota, which uses AI to develop its vehicles, improve its production quality, and support its mobility services.

Retail

Retail is the activity of selling goods or services directly to consumers or end-users. It can take place in physical stores, online platforms, or both.

Many companies in the retail industry use AI to optimize customer experiences, forecasting, inventory management, and more. AI can help:

  • Automate many tasks that were once done by humans, such as inventory tracking, warehouse sorting, and content generation.
  • Prevent shoplifting, fraud, counterfeiting, and other forms of loss by using self-checkout, facial recognition, visual search, and anti-counterfeit tools.
  • Reduce waste, energy consumption, and carbon footprint.
  • Lower operational costs by improving resource allocation, process optimization, and pricing strategies.

Among the big names that utilize AI as part of their manufacturing processes are Alibaba, which uses AI to predict what customers might want to buy, generate product descriptions, provide voice and image search, and offer customer service chatbots; and Walmart, which uses AI to scan shelves for missing products, track inventory levels, optimize pricing strategies, and offer voice shopping options.
