On behalf of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD), we are pleased to invite you to attend next Thursday’s webinar, “Authentic and Equitable Engagement Using More and Better Learning Time.” This free event will occur on Thursday, November 16, 2023, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern.

This webinar will focus on the terrific Pocomoke High School in Pocomoke City, Maryland. The guests will be Jenifer Rayne, the school’s principal and 2023 recipient of the Maryland State Education Association Human and Civil Rights Award, and Kellie Rolstad, Associate Professor at the University of Maryland, who is an expert on language education, multilingualism, and democratic and alternative education.

Pocomoke High School serves a rural community with an enrollment that’s 65% students of color and 75% of its students classified as economically disadvantaged. Among the school’s accomplishments is that it has attained some of the highest attendance rates in the country in spite of the challenges of poverty. The school offers students multiple pathways to learn academic content, engage in the arts, find their hobbies and passions, and connect with community and post-secondary partners. Rayne and Rolstad will share the school’s creative program and policy innovations now embedded into the daily lives of Pocomoke students, as well as the coaching and practice in decision making that leads to student success.

To register, go to https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/SchoolsofOpportunity3 and complete the simple form that asks for name, email, and role (e.g., “instructional staff”), as well as what ASCD programs you belong to. For that question, choose, “I am new to ASCD Member Communities” and enter something like “Schools of Opportunity” in the fill-in box.

Note that registration will be closed on the morning of the 16th, so please register before then.

This will be the third of the ASCD webinar series that draws upon learnings generated by NEPC’s Schools of Opportunity Project. The webinars roll out over 10 months and examine the Project’s practical implications for educators.

On hiatus since the onset of the pandemic, Schools of Opportunity recognizes U.S. high schools that have demonstrated a commitment to equity and excellence. The ASCD Webinars combine perspectives of researchers with on-the-ground insights from educators at schools honored by the project. All attendees will receive a discount on Schools of Opportunity, a book about the project. Please visit here to learn more about the book.
