Phil Spencer, Microsoft’s senior vice president of gaming, expressed his reservations about some NFT gaming projects, believing that the entertainment value of games is being harmed by the usage of the blockchain’s new capabilities.

When the Xbox boss offered his thoughts on various NFT initiatives during an Axios interview, the tension surrounding blockchain adoption by the game industry began to rise anew.

His opinions are crucial and influential for the future landscape of blockchain-based games because Xbox is a gaming industry online marketplace behemoth.

“Overall, what I’d say on NFT today is that I believe there’s a lot of speculation and experimenting going on, and that some of the creative I’m seeing today feels more exploitative than entertaining,” he said.

The good news for NFT game fans is that the Xbox executive is not outright rejecting them.

He didn’t express any criticism of the technology or its characteristics on his own. It appears that the way businesses are using it is driving him away.

Gaming industry’s success

In their research study Creativity In The Video Game Industry, Peter Zackariasson and Timothy L. Wilson said, “Throughout the expansion of this sector, creativity has been the core skill in generating successful and profitable video games.”

In the video game industry, creativity pervades the entire system.  It propels the industry forward, generating limitless prospects while also exerting significant pressure.

It’s possible that technological rationality and perfection have little to do with the success of video games.

The importance of creativity

In most phases of the process of making and publishing a video game, one must approach it from an aesthetic and creative standpoint.

This is a novel perspective, as we are accustomed to thinking of large companies as collections of entities driven primarily by money.

Of course, profit is important to the gaming industry, but the quality of the creativity displayed accounts for a significant portion of their earnings.
