Ford Motor Co. was the leading automaker in U.S. production volume, exports, and in U.S. hourly autoworker employment in calendar year 2022, according to a new study from S&P گلوبل موبلٹی.

Ford Motor Co. was the leading automaker in U.S. production volume, exports, and in U.S. hourly autoworker employment in 2022.

It is the fifth straight year that Ford topped the same survey. According to the study, almost 80% of the vehicles sold by Ford in the U.S. are assembled in America.

At present, Ford employs about 57,000 hourly manufacturing workers in the U.S. and the company exported more than 260,000 American-assembled vehicles to other countries in 2022. Ford leads all other automakers in those statistics.

Some may claim that BMW and its massive plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina is the largest exporter of vehicles from the U.S. — the company certainly does — but that is measured by the U.S. Department of Commerce’s value of the vehicles sent. In the case, its 227,029 vehicles totaled $9.6 billion in 2022.

Ford has already settled on plans to add more than 18,000 new U.S. manufacturing jobs during the next three years to produce electric and gas-powered vehicles.

“Ford has bet on American workers, including the UAW, more than any other automaker,” said Jim Farley, Ford president and CEO. “We could make different decisions — as many others have done to reduce costs — but Ford is different.  We will find ways to be lean and competitive while investing in our home market.”

In 2022, Ford assembled more than 1.8 million vehicles in the U.S. This includes the best-selling F-Series truck franchise, which are entirely assembled at plants in Michigan, Missouri, Kentucky and Ohio. The Illinois-assembled Explorer SUV and Kentucky-assembled Escape SUV also contribute to Ford’s U.S.-made credentials.

In addition to vehicles made in America for sale domestically, Ford exported 260,000 U.S.-assembled vehicles to other countries. Large quantity export vehicles include the F-150, Explorer and Mustang. Approximately 1 in every 7 vehicles that Ford assembles in the U.S. is now exported to other markets.

Projected employment gains

Ford previously revealed plans to expand its domestic operations, creating substantial numbers of new jobs during the next several years, primarily in electric vehicle production. For example, nearly 2,000 workers will be added at three Michigan assembly plants slated to produce the all-electric F-150 Lightning at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Dearborn. Then approximately 1,800 union jobs will be added at the Ohio Assembly Plant in Avon Lake to assemble an all-new EV commercial vehicle starting mid-decade.

Up to 6,000 workers will be added at the BlueOval City in West Tennessee to build Ford’s second-generation electric truck and to build EV batteries with partner SK On, plus 5,000 jobs with SK On at the BlueOval SK Battery Park in Glendale, Kentucky for future Ford and Lincoln EV batteries. Additionally, 2,500 jobs will be added to start up a subsidiary plant at BlueOval Battery Park Michigan in Marshall, Michigan, for production of lithium iron phosphate EV batteries.

Additionally, job gains are expected to produce the all-new combustion-engine Ranger pickup at Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, and the Mustang at Flat Rock Assembly Plant, plus a new Ford Customer Service Division packaging facility in Monroe, Michigan.

Finally, the jobs picture has grown with a new third shift at Kansas City Assembly Plant to increase production of the Transit commercial van and the E-Transit electric van. Third-shift production began last week. Ford had previously said the third shift would result in 1,100 new union jobs when complete.

“Ford is the most American of all car companies,” said Bill Ford, Ford executive chair. “As we pivot to an EV future, we are proud to continue to invest in America.”
