Kazuma Kiryu has built quite the reputation as a capable brawler, and those of us who have played previous games in the franchise know he is capable of mopping the floor with everything short of a semi-truck. Even then, I wouldn’t bet against him. But he also has to start over every time a new game releases. To access abilities and stat upgrades this time around, you mostly just have to pay for them.

With the exception of a few moves you learn right at the start, most of the abilities and upgrades you access in Like a Dragon Gaiden require you to purchase them using two in-game currencies: yen and Akame Points. You can begin acquiring the second of those two currencies not far into Chapter 2: Castle on the Water, courtesy of the Akame Network.

When you pause the game, start by choosing ‘Upgrade Abilities’ from the menu. The abilities you can learn are divided into four categories:

Stats – Improve your basic stats, such as health and attack strength.
Shared Abilities – A lot of these abilities impact heat generation and use, and a few also make it easier to enjoy the perks of Sotenbori life (such as its fine dining).
Agent – Primarily impacts the development of your Spider gadget, which you equip while fighting as an agent.
Yakuza – Lets you learn more advanced heat actions, holds, and escapes for your brawling needs in close quarters.

You will likely find you prefer particular categories. I’m big on the Stats and Shared Abilities categories. They seem to have the most immediate impact across all areas of the game. The others cater to particular fighting styles. Considering how expensive some abilities can be to learn and upgrade, you’ll want to choose carefully.

Abilities grow progressively more expensive as you upgrade them. Some upgrades require you to first max out weaker versions. For instance, Boost Attack Kiwami has 10 levels available. However, you can only unlock and upgrade it after you first learn and upgrade Boost Attack and Boost Attack EX. There are a lot of uses for yen in Like a Dragon Gaiden. I recommend focusing on a few abilities at first and then building out from there as circumstances require.
