IQT the Hague Update: Michiel Scheffer, President of the Board of the European Innovation Council, is a 2024 Speaker – Inside Quantum Technology

Michiel Scheffer, President of the Board of the European Innovation Council, appointed by the European Commission, will speak at IQT the Hague in 2024. With his extensive experience in business, academia, and public policy and a strong dedication to technological progress and innovation, Scheffer brings valuable insights into the role of breakthrough technologies and their transformative power for society.

Scheffer’s three decades of professional experience span a wide range of sectors, focusing on innovation, including breakthrough technologies, disruptive innovations, start-ups, and impact investment. His role as the President of the Board of the European Innovation Council involves scaling up innovative technologies and diligently removing barriers to their breakthrough and wide adoption.

As the Founder and CEO of Polisema BV since 2000, Scheffer has worked as an adviser and investor for start-ups in various sectors, including ICT, technical textiles, medical devices, energy storage, and biorefinery. This experience has given him a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities faced by start-ups, particularly those working with cutting-edge technologies.

From 2000 until 2015, as the Founder and CEO of Noéton Policy in Innovation BV, he provided consulting services to firms in innovation management, program management, and public affairs. He has also designed and managed several EU-funded projects, showcasing his expertise navigating the European innovation funding landscape.

As a regional Minister of Gelderland, Scheffer was nominated for best regional politician in the Netherlands in 2018. He was responsible for an ERDF Program and Interreg DE-NL and was a member of the Committee of the Regions. His political experience adds an additional understanding of how public policy can support and drive innovation.

Scheffer has worked with over 20 universities and more than 200 partners across the EU in large R&D projects. He is also an accomplished author with over 100 publications, including scientific articles, edited books, and newspaper opinions. His PhD dissertation at Utrecht University on ‘Trading Places, fashion, retailers and the changing geography of clothing production’ further proves his diverse expertise and interests.

At the IQT The Hague conference, Michiel Scheffer is expected to share insights on the role of innovation councils and public policy in supporting quantum technology and other breakthrough technologies, with his work on the European Innovation Council as an example. His presentation will likely cover strategies for scaling up innovations, fostering public-private partnerships, and removing barriers to adopting new technologies.

IQT The Hague 2024 is the Netherlands’ fifth global conference and exhibition. The Hague is a Quantum Technology Event focusing on Quantum Networking and Quantum Security. Ten vertical topics encompassing more than 40-panel talks from over 100 speakers will provide attendees with a deep understanding of state-of-the-art developments of the future quantum internet and the current impact of quantum-safe technologies on cybersecurity and quantum computers.
