JOURNEE to the BMW ‘metaverse’

What do I need to know? JOURNEE launched this month and powered BMW’s new Joytopia ‘meataverse’ on 5 September, built in association with Epic Games.

Who is JOURNEE? A new Berlin, Germany-based immersive technology company that specialises in enabling interactive, live-streamed experiences.

Metaverse, really? It is a term that is gaining traction, not least among Silicon Valley entrepreneurs and chief executive officers, most notably Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg. Despite its multiple and many definitions, JOURNEE summarises it well, quoting science fiction novelist Neal Stephenson: “A virtual world as a space where people would shop and socialise.”

So Joytopia is a metaverse for shopping and socialising, rather than the metaverse? Yes, almost. It has also been described as “a new streaming platform”, powered by JOURNEE’s technology and accessible via web browser, built using Unreal Engine by Epic Games. It is one possible interpretation among many, such as Facebook Horizon and even Workrooms.

Where JOURNEE differs from your usual streaming platform is its technology creates photorealistic 3D environments for users and their avatars. The first Joytopia took place this week and featured a performance from Coldplay. Watch the video below and see it for yourself.

Key quote from JOURNEE co-founder Thomas Johann Lorenz: “The metaverse is the next big thing for the techworld, it will enable us to experience, shop, socialise and do business both virtually and physically as we try to remain connected in a post-Covid world.”

Free demo of HitMotion: Reloaded available on Vive Focus 3

What do I need to know? Game studio New Technology Walkers has released a free demo of its fitness title, HitMotion: Reloaded, worldwide on Vive Business AppStore. The game is now compatible with the new Vive Focus 3, the latest headset from HTC Vive.

What is HitMotion: Reloaded? One of the launch titles of HTC Vive Focus Plus, developed with the support of HTC China. It is a mixed reality fitness game, utilising the front cameras of its launch headset to let the user see their surroundings so that they can play safely.

Which headsets is the game now available on? Oculus Quest 2, via SideQuest and App Lab, and now Vive Focus 3, via Vive Business AppStore.

Why is New Technology Walkers targeting the enterprise market with a game? The studio aims to improve fitness in a fun way. With cross-compatibility and a presence on mobile headsets such as Vive Focus 3, HitMotion: Reloaded could be used for entertainment sessions at work to help workers stay active.
