Older Samsung phones will welcome Galaxy AI with One UI 6.1 update

Samsung recently announced that its Galaxy AI features will be available on its flagship smartphones from 2021 and 2022, with these devices set to receive the One UI 6.1 update starting in May.

“Our goal with Galaxy AI is not only to pioneer a new era of mobile AI but also to empower users by making AI more accessible. This is only the beginning of Galaxy AI, as we plan to bring the experience to over 100 million Galaxy users within 2024 and continue to innovate ways to harness the unlimited possibilities of mobile AI,” states TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics.

There is a limitation for the 2021 smartphone models, which will only incorporate two AI functionalities: Google Circle to Search and Magic Rewrite. The latter is presumed to be akin to Chat Assist, a function within the Galaxy AI that allows alterations in the style and tone of texts using the Samsung Keyboard.

For the 2022 smartphone models, they will be updated with the same range of AI features as found in the Galaxy S23 FE, with the sole exception of Instant Slo-mo. This feature, which enables video slowdown via a screen press and hold, is considered too resource-intensive for the Exynos and Snapdragon processors that were standard in Samsung’s flagship devices prior to 2023.

Which Samsung models will have Galaxy AI with One UI 6.1 update?

A moderator from the Samsung Korea community has listed the specific models from 2021 and 2022 that will upgrade to Galaxy AI with One UI 6.1:

• Galaxy S21 series
• Galaxy Z Fold 3
• Galaxy Z Flip 3
• Galaxy S22 series
• Galaxy Z Fold 4
• Galaxy Z Flip 4
• Galaxy Tab S8 series

What to expect from Galaxy AI?

These features, available on AI-supported models, include Chat Assist which allows users to modify the tone of messages and translate them into 13 different languages. Additionally, Live Translate offers real-time voice and text translations during phone calls, and the Interpreter function facilitates spontaneous conversations with locals in different languages by providing text translations on a split-screen during live interactions.

In terms of productivity, the integration of Galaxy AI throughout the Galaxy ecosystem streamlines everyday tasks, enhancing efficiency on AI-supported devices. The Circle to Search feature, developed in collaboration with Google, enables users to perform searches with a circular gesture, producing intuitive results. Other productivity tools include Note Assist, which helps users format, summarize, and translate notes, and Browsing Assist, which provides concise summaries of news articles. Transcript Assist is also available to transcribe meeting recordings and generate summaries and translations.

Samsung’s latest updates to the Galaxy AI also focus on creativity, offering tools that support users in refining their photos and videos. The Generative Edit feature allows users to adjust, resize, or reposition elements within photos on AI-supported devices. Edit Suggestion helps enhance photos more efficiently, and Instant Slow-mo enhances videos by adding extra frames for slow-motion effects. Additionally, AI-generated wallpapers offer personalized options for customizing device backgrounds, further extending the creative capabilities of Galaxy users.

The update is scheduled for early May, initially expected to roll out in Korea, with a phased approach likely in other markets. Details regarding the update’s broader release remain uncertain, pending further announcements from Samsung.
