Yes, Pac-Man 99 is a Pac-Man Battle Royale and no, we’re not making this up.
Still, as absurd as the concept sounds, having seen it in action we’re actually looking forward to giving Pac-Man 99 a go. Instead of parachuting 99 Pac-Men into one neon maze, there are 99 players playing Pac-Man simultaneously.
You can get various power-ups but the real shenanigans happen when you munch a ghost; for each spectre you chow down, a slow-down marker is sent to an opposing player’s maze (the game supports online play only). Hit one of these and your chance of evading the pursuing ghosts is significantly reduced. You keep playing till the ghosts catch up with you, at which point you’re out. The winner is the last player left, which makes us wonder why they didn’t just call it Last Pac-Man Standing.

So how do you get your hands on this marvel? First, you’ll need a Nintendo Switch, because that’s the only platform Pac-Man 99 is currently landing on. Secondly, you’ll need to be a subscriber to Nintendo Switch Online. Finally, you’ll need to wait till the game drops later today and you’re good to go.
It’s not the first time Switch Online has got a battle royale; Tetris 99 was and still is a hell of a reason to subscribe to the service. But Pac-Man? Let’s hope Pac-Man 99 lives up to its trailer.
