The Red Sox DFA Christian Arroyo to make room for newly acquired infielder Luis Urias, who was playing in Triple A. Urias was acquired at the trade deadline for a minor league pitcher prospect.

Arroyo was having a down year this season, hitting .241 and only had three home runs this season. Arroyo also struck out a little over 20% of his plate appearances this season. Arroyo was a career .264 hitter with Boston, and had 18 home runs.

Urias, replacing Arroyo, is no better when it comes to average. Hitting a measly .145 this season, and a career .235 hitter, he would seem like a downgrade from Arroyo. However, what he lacks in average he makes up for in power. While this year he only has one home run, the two seasons before he has had 16 in 2022 and 23 in 2021.

The Sox probably picked Urias over Arroyo mainly for this, and for the fact that Urias walks more than Arroyo, and strikes out less.
