Australia’s largest independent domestic carrier, Regional Express Airlines (Rex) has announced that it has taken delivery of its sixth Boeing 737 aircraft. The Boeing 737-800NG aircraft registered VH-RYU touched down at Sydney Airport (SYD) on Thursday, April 22nd in the carrier’s distinctive Rex livery.

According to planespotter.net, this particular Boeing 737 is over 17 years old and used to be operated by Virgin Australia. Rex also confirmed that the aircraft is on lease however, declined to state from which lessor. The regional carrier outlined that it expects to take delivery of two more aircraft by July and is looking at growing its fleet even further by the end of the year.

Meanwhile, the airline is continuously looking to expand its domestic network and currently operates flights out of the Australian cities of Melbourne, Adelaide, Gold Coast, Canberra and Sydney.

In a company statement seen by AeroNews, Rex Deputy Chairman, John Sharp said “We have almost daily requests from major cities all over Australia for Rex’s services and we will work with all airports that are prepared to establish a good partnership with us.”

In December, Rex stated that it wanted to have at least six Boeing 737 aircraft. Now that the carrier has achieved this it hopes to have up to 10 Boeing 737s by the end of this year, depending on the success of its new expansion plans.

With the Australian aviation industry slowly opening up, thanks to the introduction of the Trans-Tasman travel bubble. It will be interesting to see how Rex manages its expansion plans going forward, especially within a very competitive Australian aviation market, with carriers like Qantas, Virgin Australia and Jetstar all grappling for passenger demand.
