The office of West Virginia Governor Jim Justice has released video footage of an alleged theft at a casino that involved a now-retired captain in the West Virginia State Police. An anonymous letter sent last week referenced an incident that took place in May 2021 at the Mardi Gras Casino.

It mentioned how an “appointee of Colonel Cahill” was shown on video picking up an envelope filled with cash at a slot machine. Another man had been playing on the machine before getting up and accidentally leaving the envelope behind. A different trooper eventually returned the money to the casino, but did not report the incident to his command.

The letter alleges that the West Virginia State Police covered up the incident and that the captain in question retired when he was confronted. He never received any charges relating to the matter. The West Virginia Department of Homeland Security is now conducting its own investigation.

The police force in West Virginia is facing backlash after allegations of significant widespread misconduct among department leaders came to light. State Police Colonel Jan Cahill stepped down from his position on Monday.
