A Series into the People active on the WAX Blockchain

It took COVID to make Darren Cullen, founder of the Graffiti Kings, take notice of blockchain and crypto. Already an alternative thought leader who had created an international career through unconventional art, the lockdowns made him rethink his world.

“I’d been bombarded with emails ten years before on how to mine Bitcoin on your computer, but I had totally ignored the whole world of crypto. So, at the start of COVID I started reading everything I could, went down the rabbit hole and ultimately ended up selling my house and putting everything into crypto.”

At the same time, the rise of NFTs came to the fore and Darren began experimenting with his art. However, the surge in gas prices on the Ethereum blockchain put him off.

“I minted one NFT and the gas fees were a couple of cents, but when I went back a week later, the gas had jumped to $45, and I knew this was just not feasible.”

It was at that point Darren discovered the WAX platform and more importantly the no fees. That and the community.

It was at that point Darren discovered the WAX platform and more importantly the no fees. That and the community.

“There is so much going on in crypto, so I try to interact as much as possible. The community is very supportive. I try to talk about projects rather than focus on myself – there is a lot of good communication and education in the different social channels which is also very helpful.”

For Darren, Twitter is the social medium for finding out about projects on WAX and sharing news.

“I thought Twitter was only for celebrities to complain about stuff, but now I see a vibrant community of engaged WAX supporters. It’s a quick way to catchup on what is happening on the platform.”

Originally Darren tried to talk crypto on other platforms such as Facebook but found the people there were not engaged, despite having a healthy 3 million or so followers. However, within a few months of being on Twitter, his new platform exploded, and he already has almost 100,000 followers – and they are very engaged.

The other aspect of minting on WAX that really works for Darren is the level of collaboration between different entities and people.

“That’s how I work in the world of Graffiti Art – I work with different artists and I also work with different brands. It makes much more sense to team up to learn more and to find more supporters.”

One of his most successful collaborations was with R2 when he co-produced a collection last year which sold more than 500,000 NFTs in 48 hours. This collection featured Darren and three of his graffiti artist friends that have worked with him for years in the real world.

“The drop was to celebrate our work over the past 20 years and it is still active.”

That drop happened in May 2021 and Darren is planning a second one this year too.

In addition to drops featuring graffiti art, Darren is also working with physical hand painted toys. Called Urban toys, or big boy toys, these toys are very popular.

“They are edgy,” explains Darren.

The physical collection is called the Crypto Moonboys and there are three different gangs with fictional characters such as the Bitcoin Kid running the Hodl Warriors Gang. The other gangs are called the Allcity Bulls and the Nomad Bears.

These have proven very popular and at least one urban toy has sold for 6000 WAX on the secondary market.

Following on with his collaborations, Darren teamed up with Nick Saponaro, CEO of the DiviProject, who also runs an Urban Toy company.

“Nick is now licensing the Crypto Moonboys and we are able to go into bigger production. The DiviProject is also into gaming so we are working on a game for the NFTs – there is no end of the projects coming from my WAX friends.”

Darren has also moved into creating his own token, the LFGK token. This token can be earned by players of the new game and is also listed on the Alcor Exchange.

Darren has minted 9 billion LGFK coins – he doesn’t do anything by half.
