You’ll have to pay extra to play a Jabba the Hutt mission in Star Wars Outlaws.

Controversy is surrounding Ubisoft’s upcoming open-world game Star Wars Outlaws this week, after fans discovered that its Jabba the Hutt mission is locked behind a Season Pass. The slug-like crime lord was featured in the game’s latest trailer, but Ubisoft’s description of its Season Pass suggests that players won’t be able to play his sidequest unless they pay extra for it.

Here’s the game’s story trailer:

Star Wars Outlaws’ Jabba the Hutt mission is locked behind Season Pass

Ubisoft’s upcoming open-world game Star Wars Outlaws is packing in almost everything a fan of the franchise could hope for multiple new planets to explore, lots of returning scenery, dogfights in spaceships and Stormtroopers. While there’s likely enough content here to satisfy fans upon release, the game’s Jabba the Hutt mission won’t be included in the base package. If you want to do a mission for Tatooine’s iconic crime lord, you’ll have to shell out extra for the Season Pass.

As described on Star Wars Outlaws’ official website, the Season Pass gives players access to a unique ‘Jabba’s Gambit’ mission:

Just as Kay is putting together a crew for the Canto Bight heist, she receives a job from Jabba the Hutt himself. Turns out that ND-5 owes Jabba a debt from years ago, and he has come to collect…

That might not be such a problem if the Season Pass wasn’t so massively overpriced at the moment. The Season Pass will likely be available as a separate purchase after launch, but the only way players can get it right now is by buying the game’s Gold or Ultimate Editions. For reference, the base game costs $70, while the Gold and Ultimate Editions cost $110 and $130 each. The Gold Edition gives players three days of early access and the Season Pass, while the Ultimate Edition gives them the same stuff along with a bunch of cosmetics and a digital art book.

It’s unlikely that Jabba the Hutt is locked entirely behind the Season Pass however, as the crime lord heads up one of the many criminal factions in Outlaws and thus might be a key player in its story. He’ll probably pop up in a cutscene at some point, but there’s a chance that players won’t be able to meaningfully interact with him unless they have the Season Pass. We’ve seen Han Solo’s body frozen in carbonite in some of the game’s recent marketing, suggesting that players might have to assist Jabba in smuggling it from Bespin in-game.

If that ends up being locked behind the Season Pass, it’s going to be a bummer for Star Wars fans, to say the least. Outlaws is set in between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of Jedi, placing it right before Luke Skywalker and his friends mounted a rescue of Han Solo in the latter movie. The game’s story follows a gang of outlaws led by the protagonist Kay and her axolotl-like companion Nix, who seek a new life by outwitting the galaxy’s many crime syndicates.

Star Wars Outlaws launches on August 27, 2024.
